Abstract

Current reminder systems assume the user knows what type of information should be conveyed at the specified date/time. Moreover, current reminder systems require the user to manually assess relevant data and determine if a creation of a reminder event is desirable. Although, prior art describes methods that allow automatic reminders based on ACTION-DUE dates, this art automatically creates reminders for the user upon receipt of mail items. This creates the problem that a user may have hundreds of reminder events generated for superfluous matters. It is desirable to have a mechanism that allows the user to specify conditions under which an automatic reminder will be generated on behalf of the user.

Predicate Reminder Service Mechanism

Current reminder systems assume the user knows what type of
information should be conveyed at the specified date/time.  Moreover,
current reminder systems require the user to manually assess relevant
data and determine if a creation of a reminder event is desirable.
Although, prior art describes methods that allow automatic reminders
based on ACTION-DUE dates, this art automatically creates reminders
for the user upon receipt of mail items.  This creates the problem
that a user may have hundreds of reminder events generated for
superfluous matters.  It is desirable to have a mechanism that allows
the user to specify  conditions under which an automatic reminder
will be generated on behalf of the user.

This article describes a mechanism and methodology for handling
predicate conditions to create reminder events.  A Predicate Reminder
Registration service allows users to specify conditions under which a
reminder should be generated.  In addition, users can specify
associated information that should be conveyed at the time of
notification.  Users can specify pre-defined data or dynamic data
generated from the predicate condition.  Conditions for reminder
event generation can be specified by the user via typical user
interface techniques.  In addition, "exclusionary" conditions can be
specified, such as generate a reminder if I have not received a
specified document by a specified time.
