Expanding a Field to Fill in More Information or Clarify Its Content

A method for expanding a field into more basic controls and
information is presented.  By filling in the basic controls, the
value for the single field is dynamically build to teach users the
constructs used in this field so they can become more expert with the
system.

Products in a graphical user environment have relied solely on
help and a user's learning to fill in the complex controls A few
products have provided, for some specific instances of the control
complex controls, a push button next to the field.  This solution,
however, is not pervasive, nor does it allow users to see how their
selections in the simpler controls affect the contents of the more
complex control.  This will prevent users from quickly learning what
incantations are associated with desired behavior, thus preventing
them from becoming experts in that area of the product.  The push
buttons also utilize relatively large amounts of the limited and
valuable screen real estate, requiring a developer to use more
complex controls to limit the area of screen real estate being
utilized.

This solution provides a standard mechanism for opening an
additional property window with simpler controls to form the contents
of a more complex control.  This solution also proposes a standard
relative to positioning of the clarification window in relation to
the complex control with which a user is working.

This access mechanism for opening a clarification window is to
add a pop-up menu to each control, accessed in...
