Synthesis of Diaryliodonium and Triarylsulfonium Trifluoromethanesulfonates

      Described is an efficient method for the synthesis of
diaryliodonium and triarylsulfonium trifluoromethanesulfonates
(triflates).

      Trifluoromethanesulfonic  (triflic)  acid  was  added to
diphenyliodonium chloride in a suitable organic solvent such as
dichloromethane and the mixture was heated  under  gentle reflux.
The mixture was cooled, diethylether was added and the  precipitate
was  filtered  to  give   diphenyliodonium triflate  as  a white
solid.  Using diphenyliodonium bromide or iodide in place of
diphenyliodonium  chloride  also  gave diphenyliodonium triflate by
the above reaction.

      Addition  of  triflic acid to triphenylsulfonium bromide and
treatment by the above  method  gave  triphenylsulfonium triflate
which was recrystallized from ethylacetate to give white needles.

      Similarly tris(4-tolyl)sulfonium triflate  was  obtained from
tris(4-tolyl)sulfonium bromide by the above reaction.

      Thus, treatment of diaryliodonium halides and triarylsulfonium
halides with triflic acid represents a simple one-step synthesis of
diaryliodonium and triarylsulfonium triflates.
