Abstract

The invention disclosed is a light-weight, multiple channel rotary union for use in tooling applications. The union provides multiple isolated feedthrough paths for gas or liquids, said paths running coaxially through a rotating coupling, and being isolated with seals similar to "O" rings. The invention is useful, for example, in tools used to assemble head-disk assembly (HDA) spindles.

Coaxial Rotary Union

      The invention disclosed is a light-weight, multiple channel
rotary union for use in tooling applications.  The union provides
multiple isolated feedthrough paths for gas or liquids, said paths
running coaxially through a rotating coupling, and being isolated
with seals similar to "O" rings.  The invention is useful, for
example, in tools used to assemble head-disk assembly (HDA) spindles.

      The union consists of a rotor, a rotor housing, stator and
bearings.  The housing comprises a plurality of seals and retainer
rings to prevent leakage between feedthrough paths.  Two or more
coaxial paths may be provided by varying the diameter and/or length
of the rotor and stator.  Increasing the diameter and/or length
accomodates the addition of more seals and retaining rings to provide
plenums and ports.

      The proposed design offers the advantages of simplicity, ease
of adaptability, small size, light weight, low friction and low cost.
