Abstract

A method to allow a system operator in an APPN network to view and monitor the status of the APPN network topology is disclosed. The APPN topology consists of all the control points (nodes) and transmission groups (links between the nodes) in the APPN network. This method provides a graphical user interface to the APPN network topology on a programmable workstation (PWS). The method provides dynamic collection of APPN network topology information across the network by introducing a topology "manager" application, and topology "agent" applications distributed throughout the network. Agents collect local topology information and forward it to the manager where it is stored and combined to provide a complete view on a PWS.

      A method to allow a system operator in an APPN network to view
and monitor the status of the APPN network topology is disclosed.
The APPN topology consists of all the control points (nodes) and
transmission groups (links between the nodes) in the APPN network.
This method provides a graphical user interface to the APPN network
topology on a programmable workstation (PWS).  The method provides
dynamic collection of APPN network topology information across the
network by introducing a topology "manager" application, and topology
"agent" applications distributed throughout the network.  Agents
collect local topology information and forward it to the manager
where it is stored and combined to provide a complete view on a PWS.
In addition, enhancements to AS/400* VLIC (vertical licensed internal
code) and Operating System/400* provide a new interface to enable
applications to collect dynamic APPN topology data.

      A cooperative application program was created to display a
graphical picture of the APPN network on one or more programmable
workstations (1) attached to a central AS/400 "manager" system (2).
This provides a way for an operator to view the APPN network at a
single display, and to monitor the status of the overall network.
Capability is provided to allow the topology display to be projected
onto a user-defined map (such as a map of the United States or the
world).  Customized views of the topology may defined by an operator
to be displayed with particular operator-defined maps.

      An infrastructure was created to send information about the
current topology, and any updates that occur to the topology, from
systems in the network to the central manager system where it is
aggregated to a control information base (3) to be accessed by the
PWS's for graphical display.  The infrastructure consists of the
following:

o   A "manager" application program (4) which is installed at a
    central AS/400 system in the network.  The manager collects some
    of the topology information from the system itself (5) ("network
    topology" data) and some from the agents (8) ("local topology"
    data).  Topology information collected includes initial topology
    as well as topology updates as they occur.

o   An "agent" application program (6) may be installed and activated
    on multiple AS/400 agent systems (7) distributed throughout the
    network.  The agents collect "local topology" data (8) and
    forward it to the manager.  Topology information collected
    includes initial topology as well as topology updates as they
    occur.

o   Enhancements in OS/400 (9) and AS/400 VLIC (10) installed on the
    manager and agent systems provide dynamic APPN topology
    information to the manager and agent applications which register
