Abstract

A data storage library architecture employing a wall of dual opening cartridge cells, pass through pickers and pickers with pivoting carriage arm which can access to two adjacent cells. This architecture provides total redundancy for continued availability, multi picker per cell for high performance and total cartridge pass through capability.

Extendable Data Storage Library with High Performance Capability

      A data storage library architecture employing a wall of dual
opening cartridge cells, pass through pickers and pickers with
pivoting carriage arm which can access to two adjacent cells.  This
architecture provides total redundancy for continued availability,
multi picker per cell for high performance and total cartridge pass
through capability.

The design of this invention (Fig. 1), and comprises:

o   Pass through picker assemblies 1 that can pick and insert a
    cartridge at both ends, it also can pass the cartridge through
    the gripping means 2.

o   Walls of cartridge cells and drives 3 wherein the cartridges are
    stored in the inserting direction of the drives and all drives
    are mounted in the same orientation.  The cartridges can be
    picked and inserted at both ends of the storage cells,

o   Detaining means 4 to firmly hold the cartridges in the storage
    cells,

o   Picker assemblies with pivoting carriage arm 5.

      As illustrated in Fig. 2, the library configuration of this
invention has cartridge/drive cells 3 positioned one next to the
other.  A row of pickers with pivoting arms is located in the origin
side of the drive inserting direction.  At the opposite side, the
