Low Noise Hard Disk Drive

      Disclosed is a method to reduce acoustic noise from a low-end
hard disk drive (HDD).  It is known that acoustic emission may be
lowered by reducing vibration of a top cover.  The present method
lowers the emission from the top cover by using a yoke of a voice
coil motor (VCM) as a restraint.

      The requirement for lower acoustic level is getting tighter and
tighter.  The top cover of the HDD is said to be one of major origins
of acoustic noise due to its vibration.  Therefore, from a viewpoint
of acoustic noise reduction, it is important to suppress the
vibration of the top cover.  Some countermeasures have been
conventionally adopted to suppress the vibration, e.g., additional
mass and/or damping plate on the top cover has been used.  However,
it would violate the form factor of the HDD.

      The VCM yoke usually has much higher rigidity than that of the
damping plate or other additional mass.  Therefore, it is suitable
for a restraint to reduce the vibration of the top cover.  The
present method inserts a viscoelastic material into an existing space
between the top cover and the VCM yoke by which the top cover is
affixed to the VCM yoke.  This is effective in reducing the vibration
of and hence the acoustic noise from the top cover of the HDD without
any violation of the drive form factor, especially its height.
