Abstract

Disclosed is a method for producing an ASCII file that defines the generic alerts using a keyword approach. Once the design work on the "new" generic alert has been completed (i.e., all code points identified), then it can be described using the simple keyword approach described in this disclosure.

LAN Server Generic Alert Definition Keywords

Disclosed is a method for producing an ASCII file that defines
the generic alerts using a keyword approach.  Once the design work on
the "new" generic alert has been completed (i.e., all code points
identified), then it can be described using the simple keyword
approach described in this disclosure.

A means of adding new generic alerts and maintaining code that
supports existing alerts for the LAN Server* release is very complex.
The intent here is to reduce that complexity and make adding new
generic alerts easier and, at the same time, make maintaining the
code easier.

The following is an overview of the keywords used to define
generic alerts.  Each keyword is followed by one or more parameters.

        MSG:   msgid        or  msgid(subid,index)
        ALERT: alert_type  alert_desc  probable_causes (1-5 causes)
        UC:    causes  (1-5 causes)
        UA:    actions (1-5 actions)
SF:    sub_field_type 00 "string data in quotes" FF
        SF:    sub_field_type 01 w FF
(where w = insert text index)

        SF:    sub_field_type 02 "filename" w FF
(where w = insert text index of search string)
        SF:    sub_field_type 03 "filename" x y FF
(where y = parm index into search string)
SF:    sub_field_type 04 "filename" "search string" FF
        SF:    sub_field_type 05 FF

        IC:    install_causes  (1-5 causes)

        IA:    install_actions (1-5 actions)

         SF:    (see user section above)

        FC:    failure_causes  (1-5 causes)
        FA:    failure_actions (1-5 actions)
        SF:    (see user section above)

The following defines the parameters associated with each
keyword in more detail.

1.  MSG:   msgid  or  msgid(subid,index)         (1-n msgIDs)

The "MSG:" keyword is used to define which message IDs are
associated with this alert description.  There can be as many
message IDs, separated by one or more blanks, as needed.  The
message
IDs can span more than one line.  This is the only keyword that
allows this.  Normally, the message ID is expressed as 4-digits,
but, in some cases, must be further identified to make it unique
to
the alert description.  In this case, the message ID is followed
by
a parenthetical sub-ID to make it unique.   The sub-ID is
composed
of two fields separated by a comma.  The first is the sub-ID and
the
second is the message insertion text index (relative to zero)
used
at run-time to obtain the sub-ID.   The message ID might appear
as
    follows:
