Window Management Mechanism with User-Definable Window

Disclosed is a window management mechanism for defining window
identifiers which appear as window icons in a list of windows.  This
mechanism enables a user to define a portion of data handled in a
window as a window identifier.

An identifier-defining mode is invoked by a pre-assigned
command in a window.  When this mode is invoked, a rectangular region
appears in the window as a default value of the window identifier, as
shown in Fig. 1 (a).  A user can move this rectangle in the window,
and also can change the size of this rectangle by dragging an
appropriate part of this rectangle via a mouse pointer (Fig. 1(b)).
Thus a user can assign an arbitrary part of the data in a window as
its identifier.

Once a window identifier is defined, it is maintained as a
window icon in the list of widows, as shown in Fig. 2.

The present mechanism allows users to utilize graphic data as
well as text data as window identifiers.  Thus it enables a user to
choose quickly and intuitively one specific window from a list of
windows.
