Antenna on Flexible Carrier

      Disclosed is an antenna formed as a trace on flexible carrier
material, in which flexibility is achieved to prevent mechanical
breakage, without requiring shortening of the antenna length to
compensate for the added inductance of the wire coils used in a
conventional flexible antenna.

      As shown in Fig. 1, a flexible dielectric carrier 1, which may
for example, be fabricated from a circuitized sheet of polyimide
resin, includes a conductive trace 2, which may, for example, be
copper, functioning as a radio antenna.  Associated components
required for operation of a radio, such as electronic circuit modules
3, may also be soldered to circuits of carrier 1, with various
circuit traces (not shown) interconnecting modules 3 and antenna
trace 2.  For further protection against damage, the assembly thus
formed may be covered with an elastomeric cover 4.

      This design eliminates a connector between the antenna and
other circuit components, thereby eliminating losses which would
otherwise be associated with the impedance mismatch of such a
connector.

      Alternately, a flexible carrier 5 may be divided into various
sections, such as a transmission line section 6, a receiving antenna
section 7, a transmitting antenna section 8, and possibly a diversity
receiving antenna section 9, with various components being located
within the sections.  The ground planes of carrier 5 may be
interrupted between adjacent sections.
