Filtering of Multimedia Links - 'Webs of Hyper-Links' - Using Predefined Attributes

This invention describes a method whereby only a subset of
information (from a hyper-linked document) closer to the user's area
of interest is presented to the user.

Like any other form of information, hyper-linked documents can
become very large in size.  Moreover, by the very nature of such
documents, these documents can be a collection of pieces of
information on very diverse subjects.  No known method or criterion
exists to parse through and filter out huge webs of hyper-links.

Such a method, if available, will help user productively use
and manipulate large amounts of information contained in huge
hyper-nets.

This invention proposes 1) providing the ability to assign
attributes to each link and 2) defining a command language which will
let the user specify the criteria for selecting that subset of links
he is currently interested in.  After specifying the criteria, the
user is expected to get another web of hyper-links representing a
smaller document which is closer to his area of interest.

The creator of the original hyper-linked document and anybody
who subsequently modifies it are expected to assign attributes while
creating the hyper-links.  Identification and exact definition of
these attributes is left to the authors.  The user will then be able
to give appropriate commands to filter out the unnecessary pieces of
information which are connected by the links with unnecessary
attributes.

The basic idea is, not only the actual pieces of information,
but also the links can have certain attributes of their own which can
be assoc...
