Abstract

Disclosed is a slider control that displays the slider setting directly in the slider box. This allows the user to directly set the value while providing direct visual feedback as to the exact value set. This makes it easy to make a setting where there is a very fine gradation between choices and where it is difficult to tell exactly what choice is being made. In addition, it provides feedback in the slider itself, thereby saving space on the screen.

Visible Slider Field

Disclosed is a slider control that displays the slider setting
directly in the slider box.  This allows the user to directly set the
value while providing direct visual feedback as to the exact value
set.  This makes it easy to make a setting where there is a very fine
gradation between choices and where it is difficult to tell exactly
what choice is being made.  In addition, it provides feedback in the
slider itself, thereby saving space on the screen.

Slider bars provide an easy way to directly manipulate the
values of a parameter in a way that closely maps the function of
common objects in today's electronic environment.  However, although
they can easily discriminate coarse settings, they have difficulty
discriminating among a large number of fine settings.  Traditional
solutions have used a separate field to show the setting being made
by the slider bar.  The problem with such solutions is that they
separate the slider from the display of the actual value and they use
valuable screen space to display the settings.

The visual slider contains a slider box with a display field.
As the user drags the slider box up and down the bar, the display
field in the box is changed to reflect the actual value being
selected.

Users will observe the following benefits: improved slider bar
function, space saving on the screen, ease of use in actually making
a setting using the slider bar.
