User-Customized Direct Manipulation

      Provided is a technique that allows users to customize the
results of direct manipulation operations in order to overcome
deficiencies with conventional techniques.

Provide end users with conventional direct manipulation features.  In
addition, provide the following enhancements:

      Implement valid direct manipulation operations in a Direct
Manipulation Table (DMT).

      The DMT is structured as at least a 2-dimensional table of
objects and valid operations, where each row depicts sources of
direct manipulation, each column depicts targets for direct
manipulation, and each cell depicts the result of a direct
manipulation operation, e.g., Move or Copy.

      Provide users access to the DMT via a Settings Dialog.

      Allow DMT interactions to enable potentially valid operations,
disable operations that the user does not wish, override and
substitute user defined operations.

      In addition, allow dynamic override of changes to allow user
testing of operations before a final commit.

An end user will experience the following benefits:

o   new functionality,
o   improved learning,
o   improved usability, and
o   reduced errors and worksteps.
