Improved Visual Slider Control

      This article describes improvements to the visual slider
control described in [*].  The referenced visual display slider
control is similar to slider controls in the physical world.  To set
the control, the visual slider control allows the user to:

o   Drag the slider arm to any desired position on the slider shaft
o   Click the mouse button on a location on the slider shaft to move
    the slider arm
o   Click the mouse button on left and right directional arrows to
    move the slider arm in small increments

This design can be improved by providing the following functions:

o   Allow the user to type in a specific value for the control
    setting
o   Show the specific value on which the control is set
o   Move directional arrows to more typical positions beside the
    slider shaft

      The improvements are shown in the Figure.  The first
improvement is to provide an entry field in which the user can type
specific control values.  To use this function, the user overtypes
any value shown in the entry field and presses the keyboard or mouse
Enter key.  The slider arm moves to the entered position on the
slider shaft.  If the entered value is not valid for the control,
then the system shows an error message pop-up window and the slider
arm stays in the current position.
