Abstract

In network environments where there are many workstations, software problem isolation is difficult. It is especially difficult when the workstations have no local media (no diskette or hard drive). In these cases, the system trace facility of OS/2* is particularly deficient. Often times, software defects will manifest themselves in a random pattern, further complicating isolation.

LAN Trace Facility for OS/2 LAN Server and DOS LAN Requester

In network environments where there are many workstations,
software problem isolation is difficult.  It is especially difficult
when the workstations have no local media (no diskette or hard
drive).  In these cases, the system trace facility of OS/2* is
particularly deficient.  Often times, software defects will manifest
themselves in a random pattern, further complicating isolation.

To solve the problem as stated, a network feature called a
Mailslot is used.  This architected feature of OS/2 LAN Server allows
one-way communication between two network workstations.  Mailslot
calls are placed in strategic places in programs to return problem
determination information.  The calls must include the name of the
workstation and should include the name of the product and component
reporting the problem.  An example of the text string written to the
Mailslot might be:
  REVEILLE: NETWKSTA.200: FS_READ: returning x04, filename is
CONFIG.SYS In this example, workstation REVEILLE reports an error
from the NETWKSTA.200 module in the FS_READ procedure.  The specific
error being reported follows the procedure name, "returning x04,
filename is CONFIG.SYS" in this example.  All workstations on the
network can report errors in this way.

The second piece of the LAN Trace Facility is the Trace
Collector.  The collector receives all trace Mailslot transactions
and can display or log the information.  The collector program can be
run on any workstation on the network.  The name of the coll...
