Current computer keyboards are designed for very general use, but typically a user must remember where certain functions map with respect to specific keys. Color coding keys is a way to deal with this problem by providing users with a personalized keyboard to enhance individual productivity. This concept can be exploited as a distinctive marketing tool as well.

Stylizing Key Caps With Color

      Current computer keyboards are designed for very general use,
but typically a user must remember where certain functions map with
respect to specific keys.  Color coding keys is a way to deal with
this problem by providing users with a personalized keyboard to
enhance individual productivity.  This concept can be exploited as a
distinctive marketing tool as well.

      More specifically, currently the entire PS/2* product line
employes a keyboard design that utilizes easily removable key caps.
All data entry keys are white in color while most function keys are
beige.  It is not uncommon to see keyboard overlays or templates used
as memory tools to help people with simple tasks.  Colored key caps
would aid recognition of the specific keyboard map.  Associating a
specific color with a function, increases the keyboard users
productivity.  It presently appears that distinctively colored
keyboards are not used, and colorizing the keyboard as a marketing
tool has yet to be exploited.

      Sets of multi-colored key caps (possibly used in conjunction
with keycap overlay stickers), would enhance productivity.  It is
commonplace for users to dedicate a majority of their time to a
specific (or set of specific), software package(s), so that a set of
specially colored caps could be created for different software
packages.
