Abstract

Disclosed is a mechanism of handling a screen environment as a whole at window systems. At window systems such as personal computer systems and electrical blackboard systems, optimal arrangement of windows displayed is varied among users and/or jobs done in order to attain the best possible productivity. Here arrangement of windows is represented by the set of the position, size, and kind of work done at each window and relative positions of windows which are on the screen at a certain time.

      Disclosed is a mechanism of handling a screen environment as a
whole at window systems.  At window systems such as personal computer
systems and electrical blackboard systems, optimal arrangement of
windows displayed is varied among users and/or jobs done in order to
attain the best possible productivity.  Here arrangement of windows
is represented by the set of the position, size, and kind of work
done at each window and relative positions of windows which are on
the screen at a certain time.

      This mechanism, called an environment icon, enables processing
of the whole window environment such as storing the whole of the
current screen environment, displaying the stored screen environment,
exchanging the screen environment by sending this environment icon
through network, and processing two screen environments such as
merging and overriding.  Notice that the above requests can be done
in real time.  Thus, users can save the current screen environment as
an environment icon for the later process at any time, and switch to
another screen environment for conducting a different job by just
opening a stored environment icon, and send the whole screen
environment to other terminals/users to resume users' work there or
share working screen environment with other people just by sending an
associated environment icon.
