Abstract

A method for randomly accessing information in the form of animation, video, or audio, in multimedia applications is disclosed. This method uses a graphical control segment which is displayed at the top or bottom of the window in which the multimedia application is running. A pointing device, such as a mouse, is used to select the start and end points, forward or reverse, and the rate. Other features allow tab setting, segment marking, looping on segments, freeze frame, and manual control mode.

Motion Bar for Controlling Events within Multimedia Applications

      A method for randomly accessing information in the form of
animation, video, or audio, in multimedia applications is disclosed.
This method uses a graphical control segment which is displayed at
the top or bottom of the window in which the multimedia application
is running.  A pointing device, such as a mouse, is used to select
the start and end points, forward or reverse, and the rate.  Other
features allow tab setting, segment marking, looping on segments,
freeze frame, and manual control mode.

Following is a definition of terms:

Time Bar            Horizontal  area which contains a cursor within a
                    window and time directional controls on each end

Time Cursor         Object within the time bar which  moves  left  or
                    right  to indicate or control the position within
                    the file and the direction in which the  file  is
                    being played

Time directionals   Left and right arrows on each end of the time bar

Scale Area          Area above the time bar with scale markings

Marker Area         Area  above  the  scale  area  which  is  used to
                    display marker settings

Segment Area        Area above the  marker  area  which  is  used  to
                    display segment settings with horizontal bars

Segment Bar         Horizontal  bar  in  the segment area to indicate
                    user defined time segments
