Flexible Media Clearning Cartridge for Optical Drives

      Disclosed is a cleaning cartridge for optical disk drives.  The
cleaning cartridge uses a rotating flexible cleaning media.  The
cleaning media position is controlled by use of the Bernoulli effect.

      A cleaning cartridge for optical disk drives is shown in the
Figure.  The outside dimensions of the cleaning cartridge is the same
as a standard optical disk cartridge.  (Part of the cartridge is
removed to show the cleaning disk inside.)  The cleaning media is a
flexible media which mounted to a standard optical disk hub so that
the media can be rotated by the drive spindle motor when inserted
into an optical drive.  The cleaning media is located adjacent to a
fixed surface in the cartridge.  An Aperture in the surface allows
access to the cleaning media by the optical lens in the drive.  (Part
of the cleaning media is removed to show the fixed surface, aperture,
and lens.)  The surface controls the position of the rotating
cleaning media by use of the Bernoulli effect.  This allows contact
of the optical lens and cleaning media to be carefully controlled.
For example, the cleaning system can be designed so that the lens
does not contact the cleaning media in its rest position.  The lens
could then be moved into the rotating cleaning media by drive control
using the focus motion of the lens.
