Slider Polishing Apparatus

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for cleaning heads
dynamically in a single disk media test system.  The head cleaning
disk, polishes the air bearing surface of the slider as the head is
loaded onto the spinning disk.

The Figure illustrates a disk 1) with polishing pads 2) stuck
to the disk's sides, in which a robot or operator can load the disk
onto the tester spindle.  The specified heads can then be loaded onto
the pads and the disk can spin at approximately 5 RPM.  This allows
the head to "sink" into the padwhile the pad surface moves under the
disk causing the removal of any loose debris or stuck-on lube and
particles.  Then the spindle can stop, the heads unload and the disk
is removed.
