Abstract

Disclosed is a system for mounting different sizes of DASD products (3-1/2" or 5-1/4") in a DASD array subsystem. This assembly can then be used in either a rack-mount or a tower configuration.

DASD Mounting System

Disclosed is a system for mounting different sizes of DASD
products (3-1/2" or 5-1/4") in a DASD array subsystem.  This assembly
can then be used in either a rack-mount or a tower configuration.

The Figure shows the bottom guide 1 (which has a built-in power
cable retention feature) and top guide 2 with the separator plates 3
between.  Slots are provided on both guides for DASD grounding
springs 4, which require no tools to assemble.

The rails 5 mount to the adapter bracket 6, which latches into
the guide assembly without the use of tools.  This adapter/rail
assembly can hold any 3-1/2" form factor DASD file 7, and also a
specially designed airflow block plate 8 to be used for cooling when
a DASD slot is left blank.

Using just the rails 5 and not the adapter bracket 6, the DASD
guide assembly will accept any 5-1/4" form factor DASD file 9.  As a
result, this DASD guide assembly can hold up to four 5-1/4" or eight
3-1/2" DASD files in a 4-high EIA unit enclosure.

This design has been tested in both a rack-mount and a tower
configuration.  It has passed all vibration, cooling, and fragility
tests in both orientations.  It will accept two different sizes of
DASD, with no tools required for maintenance or upgrades.  This total
DASD guide assembly also requires no tools to fasten it into the
final assembly.
