Hand Tool for Screw Start/Insertion

      Disclosed is a design of hand tool for the purpose of screw
"starts and inserts" which employs the gripping of the outside
circumference of the screw head with a friction collar instead of
gripping inside screw head slots or cross recesses.  Advantages are
longer tool life and use for various screw sizes at lower tool cost.

      Existing commercial screw insertion hand tools operate on
blades which expand within the screw slotted head Fig. 1 where the
blades offer a "positive drive" to the screw insertion.  This system
offers no indication of the failure of screw insertion during
assembly, such that in the event of failure of the screw insertion to
the component, serious damage may be incurred with the threads of the
screw or component.  Often experienced are tool blades that become
damaged or break beyond repair.  Consequently life expectancy of such
tools is poor.  Due to the interface method used for slotted head
tools the blades must be modified to suit each range of screw heads,
i.e.,  Torx, slotted, pozi etc.

      The above disadvantages are overcome by a new design of hand
screw insertion tool that operates via friction forces, imposed by a
collet 6, locating over and gripping on the outside of the screw head
Fig. 2.  This system has the added feature of detection of screw
insertion failure during assembly, such that friction force between
the head tool and the screw head is overcome, preventing serious
damage to screw or component and most important, damage to the hand
