Multi-Dimensional Form of Documents, Implemented Using Hypertext

Disclosed here is a use of hypertext to allow readers to peruse
information along any of several meaningful dimensions.

Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate how a hypertext tool can be used to
presednt information so that a reader can browse the information in
any desired order.  Fig. 1 would be the first screen a new reader
saw, with the words and phrases along the bottom being "buttons" that
can be "pressed" to perform actions.  For example, if the reader
clicks on the "Dimensions" button, the reader would see Fig. 2.

The Figures show only a particular example where the reader is
likely to want to change only the value of a single dimension at a
time.  However, if the reader is likely to want to change the values
of several dimension at once, i.e., in order to get to another
article, then the screen shown in Fig. 2 should be replaced by a
screen that contains all of the values of each of the dimensions.

There is important information in the orders in which the
dimensions are given and in which the values of each dimension are
given.  The dimension that is given first can be viewed as the high
order sort field.  Hence, in the printed version, all of the
information about the first value in the first (high order) dimension
will be printed first followed by all of the information about the
second such value, etc.  Within the information about each such first
dimension value,...
