Abstract

Disclosed is a stamped and formed sheet metal spring for making electrical contact between two adjacent metal surfaces. In a personal computer, this spring is applied to provide electrical contact between an electrically grounded top cover liner and a bracket extending upward as part of a frame. This application has been shown to reduce RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) emitted by the computer system during operation.

Contact Spring for Radio Frequency Interference Reduction

      Disclosed is a stamped and formed sheet metal spring for making
electrical contact between two adjacent metal surfaces.  In a
personal computer, this spring is applied to provide electrical
contact between an electrically grounded top cover liner and a
bracket extending upward as part of a frame.  This application has
been shown to reduce RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) emitted by
the computer system during operation.

      As shown in Fig. 1, a contact spring 10 includes a "U"-shaped
end portion 12, a flat portion 14, a pair of lanced tabs 16, and four
outward extending curved contact arms 18.  "U"-shaped end portion 12
is configured particularly for application over an edge of a sheet
metal part, with flat portion 14 lying against an adjacent surface of
the sheet metal part.  Lanced tabs 16 may engage a slot in the sheet
metal part to prevent the inadvertent removal of a fully installed
spring 10.  Curved arms 18 provide flexible surfaces for electrical
contact with an adjacent conductive part.

      Fig. 2 shows a portion of a sheet metal top cover liner 20, as
viewed from below and from the rear of a computer.  Three contact
springs 10 are installed on liner 20, with curved contact arms 18
extending downward, into the cavity below liner 20.  The edge upon
