Disk Boot Operational Enhancements for Personal Systems

Described is a software facility that provides for disk
boot operations on personal systems when a variety of disk drives are
installed.  The facility allows disk operating system (DOS) programs
to boot with mixed fixed disk types and provides support for disk
operations for the small computer system interface (SCSI) adapter.

When the direct bus attach (DBA) disk basic input/output system
(BIOS) gains control on a 'reset disk system' operation in a personal
system, a reset command is issued to the first DBA disk.  Upon
completion of this operation, the number of additional disk drives in
the system is detected by reading the NUMBER_OF_DISKS_IN_THE_SYSTEM
variable at 40:75H.  This variable is shared by the different BIOS
which control the different types of disks in the system.  If this
variable indicates that there is more than one disk, the DBA drive
BIOS then attempts to issue a reset command to the 'second' DBA disk
drive. The DBA control ports respond with an error if there is no
second DBA disk.  In this instance, BIOS returns with an error to the
controlling program indicating that the reset has failed.  The error
indication can then prevent the operating system to load.

The concept described herein is designed to enable a disk boot
operation when a DBA drive is installed in a personal system so that
