Abstract

Disclosed is a set of programs which comprise a menu-based development environment for precise machine vision location (mapping) of an arbitrary pattern (footprint) of Controlled Collapse Chip Connections (C4) on chips and ceramic substrates. The programs are designed for users with no machine vision or programming background.

C4 Footprint Mapping Development System

Disclosed is a set of programs which comprise a
menu-based development environment for precise machine vision
location (mapping) of an arbitrary pattern (footprint) of Controlled
Collapse Chip Connections (C4) on chips and ceramic substrates.  The
programs are designed for users with no machine vision or programming
background.

The development system, developed for use with the Cognex 3400*
machine vision system, uses the capability of the machine vision
system to store images (models) in memory and later perform a
correlation search in a target image for the best match to this
model.  In this application, the model is a C4 or group of C4.

The C4 Footprint Mapping Development System may be split into
two parts.  In the first, the footprint program, is the C software
written for the machine vision system. The footprint program uses
common functions to map all footprints - unique data for each
footprint is contained in an F file which is input to the footprint
program.  The second part, the F file Editor, is a PC menu tool which
is used to enter data specifying a new C4 footprint.  The output of
the F file Editor is an F file.  An F file contains C source code
specifying data structures which serve as input to the footprint
program.

The mapping process begins by finding a unique grouping of C4s
of minimum size (see the figure).  Only the coordinates of each C4 in
the group are stored i...
