Integral Distributed Battery Pack for Portable Systems

      Disclosed is a concept for a thin, flat battery pack for
laptop, notebook and tablet personal computing systems. Further, the
battery pack is incorporated into the bottom cover of the system to
achieve weight and cost reduction.

      Portable laptop, notebook and tablet systems use batteries as a
power source; these batteries are expected to provide multiple hours
of system use.  Depending on system configuration (files, memory,
displays, etc.), the size and weight of the battery can be a major
portion of the size and weight of the overall system.  Typical
battery weight is one to two pounds and size is a brick-like 1" X 2"
X 5".  The weight of the battery complicates its placement within the
system, because it must be located so as not to adversely affect the
"balance" of the system. This usually means the battery must be
centrally located, which may not be optimum for all the other
electronic elements that make up the system.  This non-optimum design
results in higher system cost and weight due to more complex printed
circuit card wiring, connectors and cabling that are needed.

      The concept disclosed herein changes the form factor of the
battery so that it becomes thinner, but of larger surface area.  This
distributes weight automatically and also allows the internal volume
of the system to be optimized for the system electronics.  Further,
