Optical Signal Distribution by Imbedded Wave Guide

      Disclosed is a method to achieve an optical waveguide
distribution structure by incorporating a rigid free-standing
waveguide into a protective soft or partially cured polymer layer.

      The free-standing optical waveguide can be of arbitrary
composition, such as an optical fiber or optical fiber system, with
or without cladding, a pre-patterned, cured polymer decal, or a
pre-patterned glass slab waveguide, and can be of arbitrary shape
and/or cross-section.

      The free-standing optical waveguide is then embedded into a
soft or partially cured polymer layer per the figure below.  The
resulting structure can be further treated to any desired state of
cure to impart chemical and mechanical stability to the structure
formed.  The treatments for such a cure include, but are not limited
to, thermal cures, chemical imidization reactions, or optical and
electron crosslinking of the polymer layer.
