Hard Disk Drive Data Zone Without Asperity Area

       Disclosed is a method for improving reliability of data
in a hard disk drive by means of omitting an asperity area from data
zone.

      A read/write head mounted piezoelectric transducer (PZT) or
Acoustic Emission sensor detects asperity defects (*).  Synchronizing
both PZT and read/write signal leads to finding a defects sector and
thus results in an asperity defects map on the disk surface.

      Based on the map 0.5 micrometers across area surrounding
asperity is omitted from data zone. The larger the omitted area, the
more data reliability is increased. The figure shows an example of an
asperity defects map.
