High Availability System for Use with the SS7 Network and the Intelligent Network

This article relates to the information processing system
structure to implement communication call routing and particularly to
the implementation of automatic telephone call data processing over
CCS-7 (Common Channel Signaling System 7).

                            (Image Omitted)

      U.S. Patent 4,191,860 describes: "a method...for processing
call data among telephone switching offices and remotely situated
data base systems for deriving call service information needed to
complete special service calls, such as INward WATS (Wide Area
Telephone Service)...A network of local and tool offices compiles a
special service call message including a caller dialed 800 number and
an originating area code for the INWATS service and then transmits
the message to the data base system over CCIS (Common Channel
Interoffice Signaling) facilities including a signal transfer
systems."

CCIS has been upgraded and replaced by Common Channel Signaling
System 7 (CCS-7).  Also, the data base system mentioned in the above-
mentioned patent (also known as a Service Control Point - SCP) has
been implemented by Bellcore using Digital Equipment Corporation
information processing systems.  Limitations exist with these current
implementations including:
           1.   The permanent data storage facilities do not reliably
store the telephone application data.
           2.   Processor overhead is incurred by running programs to
verify the content of the stored telephone application data.
           3.   The processors are interconnected using an Ethernet
