Abstract

The described process allows for a common gold bus bar of the center leg of the read track to be removed from the leg termination region of an interleaved magnetic tape head. This is done because of the track density of an interleaved head with eighteen reads and eighteen write tracks on the same module. Because of space limitations the center leg of the read track cannot extend between the bonding pads and connect to a common bus bar below the pads.

Read Leg From the Leg Termination Region on an Interleaved Magnetic Tape Head

       The described process allows for a common gold bus bar of
the center leg of the read track to be removed from the leg
termination region of an interleaved magnetic tape head. This is done
because of the track density of an interleaved head with eighteen
reads and eighteen write tracks on the same module.  Because of space
limitations the center leg of the read track cannot extend between
the bonding pads and connect to a common bus bar below the pads.

      This was accomplished by putting a gold bus bar above the bond
pads but below the closure region of the gap A which is insulated
from the gold legs of the write and read tracks by a crosslinked
resist insulator B, which is the same resist that is used as an
insulator over the write coils C so that a gold crossover D can be
deposited from the inter-coil to the leg gold crossover on the write
track. When the write track gold crossover is deposited using a mask
lift-off technique, the center tap read leg gold E is also deposited
and is con nected to the inter-electrical lapping guide leg and after
the module is lapped the inter-leg is connected to ground which puts
all of the center tap read legs at the same potential.  This process
change required no additional masking steps.
