Multimedia Clipboard

      Provided is a technique to allow clipboard operations of
multimedia objects in order to overcome deficiencies with
conventional approaches.

      Users are provided with conventional features for entire
multimedia objects.  In addition, users are provided with the
following extensions:
      O    Select individual elements of a multimedia object to place
on a clipboard via cut and copy.
      O    The clipboard operations can be extended to allow for copy
and paste of multimedia selections into other objects.
      O    The clipboard capability can be extended to allow
copy/paste of an entire object or a subset of objects selectively.
      O    The clipboard operations can be extended to allow receipt
of multimedia objects and selections via direct manipulation or other
supported operations.
      O    The operations can be extended to allow direct
manipulation of the object from the clipboard to other objects.
      O    The operations can be extended to allow selective direct
manipulation of contained multimedia objects from the clipboard to
other objects.

      Benefits to the end user include new functionality and
flexibility, easier initial use of the system, easier learning, and
improved usability.
