Animated Software Documentation

The disclosed system provides a way to animate the
operation of an OS/2* windowed application.  The system provides a
method for non- programmers to produce animation sequences simply by
recording their interaction with a Presentation Manager* application.

Animation is accomplished in two phases (see the figure).  In
the recording phase, the mouse and keyboard messages received by an
executing OS/2 application are recorded using the Presentation
Manager journal record hook (*). The messages are optionally
compressed and then saved on a storage device.  The recorded mouse
and keyboard messages can be played back by recalling them from
storage, decompressing them as necessary, and sending them to the
message queue of the windowed application using the Presentation
Manager journal playback hook (*).

The behavior of the application during the record phase will be
duplicated in the playback phase if the application is in the same
state at the beginning of the playback phase as it was at the
beginning of the record phase.
