Abstract

How a display data stream can be customized and a work station controller (WSC) enhanced is disclosed. The display data stream can contain both monochrome and color attributes where the work station controller uses the applicable attribute. The display data stream can contain two sets of textual information where the work station controller uses the applicable textual information based on the existence of a pointing device.

Enhanced Customization of Panel Construct Presentation in a Work Station Controller

How a display data stream can be customized and a work
station controller (WSC) enhanced is disclosed.  The display data
stream can contain both monochrome and color attributes where the
work station controller uses the applicable attribute.  The display
data stream can contain two sets of textual information where the
work station controller uses the applicable textual information based
on the existence of a pointing device.

A work station controller provides attachment of multiple non-
programmable terminals (NPTs) to a host computer system.  The host
transmits a display data stream to a WSC for processing in order to
create a display panel on an NPT.  A programmable work station (PWS)
terminal product which runs on the PWS giving the PWS user access to
host-based NPT applications; the PWS performs the function of a
combined WSC and NPT.  For the purposes of this article, a PWS is a
type of WSC.

There are display data stream minor structures which customize
attribute highlighting for things like window borders, action bars,
scroll bars, and available, unavailable, and selected choices in a
selection field. These minor structures can be enhanced to include
two attribute values for each attribute:  monochrome and color
attribute values.  The WSC uses the applicable values and discards
the other based on the target NPT (or PWS).  This concept can also be
applied to an order like the start field (SF) order; an SF order
defines an entry field on the panel. The SF order contains one
attribute value: the leading field attribute.  A new optional field
control word (FCW) can be defined for a color leading field
attribute.  If the NPT (or PWS) is color, the FCW overrides the SF
value.  If the NPT (or PWS) is monochrome, the FCW value is
discarded.

There can be three options for minor structures which customize
panel construct presentation (examples of constructs are window
border characters and scroll bar characters).  No minor structure is
included in the display data stream; therefore, WSC defaults are used
based on the capabilities of the target NPT (or PWS).  If a minor
structure is used, it can specify to use the minor structure only if
proper presentation i...
