Abstract

A method to mount standard PC cards in AS/400* book packaging and subsequently integrate them into an AS/400 system is disclosed. Both AT*/XT* style and MICRO CHANNEL* style cards can be accommodated. Using this invention, PC functions can be integrated into an AS/400 system.

Mounting PC Style Cards in Mid-Range Computer Packaging

A method to mount standard PC cards in AS/400* book
packaging and subsequently integrate them into an AS/400 system is
disclosed.  Both AT*/XT* style and MICRO CHANNEL* style cards can be
accommodated.  Using this invention, PC functions can be integrated
into an AS/400 system.

This invention packages PC style cards in AS/400 book
packaging.  Both AT/XT style and MICRO CHANNEL style cards can be
accommodated.  The following description assumes two full-length
PC-AT style cards are used.  Slight variations of this method can be
used to mount either one or more than two PC style cards as well as
mount either short or full-length cards.  These variations are
described in the section called "Variations".

The figure shows a side view of the invention.  This shows a
modified book package (A), two standard PC-AT style cards (B), cables
for power (C), and cables for logical signals (D).

Key elements of the invention are:
1.  Modified AS/400 book
The book is modified to accommodate the two PC cards. This
involves increasing the length of the book and providing internal
mounting hardware for the PC-AT cards and associated cables.  The
modified book is approximately 5 inches longer than a standard AS/400
book making its entire length approximately 14 inches.
The modified book has the same width and dimensions from the
retaining latches to the SPD bus connector end so that the mating
between the book and card cage is maintained.  This allows this
packaging to be installed in a standard AS/400 book card cage.
2.  Cabling for logic signals
Cabling for logic signals is provided between the PC cards using
card edge connectors and ribbon cable....
