Use of a Graphical User Interface for Printers

Described is a graphical user interface designed to
assist a user in dealing with printers and the objects that printers
work on.  The displayed information is presented pictorially and
manipulated directly, which simplifies all work (see the figure).

The Printer Window provides a sample presentation of the
printer related objects and their relationships to each other.

The objects include the printer itself, the queue(s) for the
printer, the print jobs that are on the queues, and the print job
that the printer is currently servicing.

The relationships show the connection of the queue to the
printer, the association of a print job with the printer, and the
associations that waiting print jobs have with a particular waiting
line.  The print jobs also show relationships with one another in
terms of ordering.  All these relationships help convey the role of
each object; for example, a waiting line is more recognizable if
shown as a line feeding into something.

In addition to showing the objects and their relationships, the
window conveys the status of each object and each relationship.  For
example, you can see if the printer is broken or printing; if the
queue is full, empty, or not-connected; or if a print job is being
held (that is, should be skipped in the order of queue processing).

Besides presenting objects, relationships and status, the
Printer Window allows you to directly manipulate this information in
the following ways:
