Automated Method of Measuring Soluble Contaminations On Smooth Surfaces

       Described is a concentration method which collects
soluble impurities (salt residues or organic impurities) in a
well-defined liquid volume for analysis.

      In known concentration methods, a liquid drop of an accurately
defined volume is spirally guided by hand or motional means across
the surface to be tested.

      The described method provides for an extraction block 1 of
Teflon*, polyethylene, or the like, to be pressed onto the surface 2
to be tested.  The extraction block comprises V-shaped grooves 3
extending from the inside to the outside. In the center and along the
edge of the block, connectors 4, 5 are positioned by which liquid is
applied, pumped through the grooves and fed to an arbitrary analytic
means.  During this, the soluble contamination is concentrated above
all in the front phase of the liquid column.

      The density and geometry of the grooves may be adapted to the
analytical requirements and be such that practically the entire
surface is wetted.

      For blind value determination, the value beyond the
contamination peak is used or the reference area is measured.  The
diffusion and solution characteristics of the contaminant may also be
determined by interrupting the liquid flow for predetermined times
and by then measuring the extent of recontamination.
