Modular Cartridge Holder

A conveniently located and removable external cartridge
holder for tape drives is disclosed which does not require any
modification to the drives, obstruct the drive's operation, or
degrade the drive's original appearance.

As shown in the figure, the cartridge holder includes a steel
wire support frame that hangs between each external front cover on a
3490E tape drive (not shown).  This support frame uses the parting
gaps between the covers of the drive to register itself in the proper
location, and attaches to the top of the covers to support its
weight.

The cartridge holder further includes at least one storage bin,
having an integrated handle and a plurality of cells for receiving
tape cartridges (with an integrated handle), which fits into the
support frame.  The storage bin can be easily lifted in and out of
the support frame while holding up to twenty tape cartridges.  All
cartridges are retained in the cells at a five-degree angle to
prevent spilling when carried or lifted into place.  Two storage bins
fit into a single support frame.  Each is held in place by support
members that are welded onto the wire frames.  These support members
capture the handles at the top of the holders and fit into molded
detents on the bottom.

The cartridge holders and support frames are narrow in width,
allowing them to be located on the tape drive without obstructing the
insertion or removal of cartridges there...
