Abstract

Disclosed is an icon design to represent the OS/2* Database Manager Recovery Tool. The icon is required for use in the Presentation Manager*-based interface to the recovery features. Graphical interfaces rely on direct manipulation interface techniques. These techniques have become standard in the industry and are based on the ability to represent objects in the user interface. These representations often take the form of icons. An icon is a pictorial representation of an object. The icon design should invoke in the user an understanding of the purpose or use of the object it represents.

Icon for a Database Manager Recovery Tool

       Disclosed is an icon design to represent the OS/2*
Database Manager Recovery Tool. The icon is required for use in the
Presentation Manager*-based interface to the recovery features.
Graphical interfaces rely  on direct manipulation interface
techniques. These techniques have become standard in the industry and
are based on the ability to represent objects in the user interface.
These representations often take the form of icons.  An icon is a
pictorial representation of an object.  The icon design should invoke
in the user an understanding of the purpose or use of the object it
represents.  An icon for the Recovery Tool supports the Database
Manager portion of OS/2 Extended Services by providing a user
interface for the following capabilities:
  * Backup database
  * Restore database
  * Recover (roll recover log forward) database
  * Check user access status (available, backup pending, recovery
pending and start using pending) for cataloged databases

      Several symbols were evaluated and it was determined that the
standard database icon shown partially in a file drawer was the best
indication of an archive or recovery tool. This icon represents the
tool capable of performing the database recovery tasks.
