Abstract

This article describes an efficient technique for translating hypermedia link markers. Currently, applications using hypermedia products are effectively restricted to using only one language for the hypermedia data. The text fields contained within the hypermedia link markers are supplied when the marker is created. There is no way for translators to access all the link marker text and translate it for a version of the application in another language. To accomplish this with current technology, the web data base would need to be copied, and the data for each link marker would need to be modified while viewing the individual documents. This is clearly a time-consuming, manual, error-prone task.

This text was extracted from an ASCII text file.
This is the abbreviated version, containing approximately 59% of the total text.

Hypermedia Translation Tool

This article describes an efficient technique for
translating hypermedia link markers.  Currently, applications using
hypermedia products are effectively restricted to using only one
language for the hypermedia data.  The text fields contained within
the hypermedia link markers are supplied when the marker is created.
There is no way for translators to access all the link marker text
and translate it for a version of the application in another
language.  To accomplish this with current technology, the web data
base would need to be copied, and the data for each link marker would
need to be modified while viewing the individual documents.  This is
clearly a time-consuming, manual, error-prone task.

A new hypermedia translation tool is required to give the
translator access to all the hypermedia link markers containing text
data.  The translator runs the tool, passing it the name of the
hypermedia web data base to be translated and the name of the
translated web data base.  It provides the following functions for
each link marker in the web data base (thus, the translator is
assured that no markers will be omitted from the translation
process):
o    It presents the link marker to the translator.  It
normally presents the marker in a window. If the document containing
the marker is available, the translator has the option of requesting
that the page containing the marker be presented.
