Abstract

This article describes a new link-enabled OS/2* Presentation Manager* text field control. Currently, much interface code must be written to enable different applications to invoke and pass data to each other. Moreover, new code must be written for each such interface. In particular, there is no easy way to create Hypermedia links from text fields (OS/2 Presentation Manager controls of class WC_STATIC) so that when the link marker is pressed by the user, the text within the field will be automatically passed to another application.

Hypermedia Text Field Link Markers

       This article describes a new link-enabled OS/2*
Presentation Manager* text field control.  Currently, much interface
code must be written to enable different applications to invoke and
pass data to each other.  Moreover, new code must be written for each
such interface.  In particular, there is no easy way to create
Hypermedia links from text fields (OS/2 Presentation Manager controls
of class WC_STATIC) so that when the link marker is pressed by the
user, the text within the field will be automatically passed to
another application.

A new link-enabled OS/2 Presentation Manager text field control
should be created.  This control is created with a new style (called
WS_LINKABLE).  This specifies that the control will work like an
ordinary text field control unless it is activated by its parent
application as a link marker. When activated as a link marker (i.e.,
invoked via mouse button or keystroke), it will behave like any other
link marker.  In addition, the data contained in the text field will
be passed (via the Hypermedia program controlling the linking) to the
target application. This new control will look like an ordinary text
field control until it is enabled.  Once enabled, it could be
highlighted, framed, or distinguished in some other way.

Hypermedia text field link markers allow the user to pass the
data contained in text fields to other applications that are invoked
