Abstract

Disclosed is an icon design to represent the OS/2* Database Manager Remote NETBIOS System. The icon is required for use in the Presentation Manager*-based interface to the remote NETBIOS system object. Graphical interfaces rely on direct manipulation interface techniques. These techniques have become standard in the industry and are based on the ability to represent objects in the user interface. These representations often take the form of icons. An icon is a pictorial representation of an object. The icon design should invoke in the user an understanding of the purpose or use of the object it represents. An icon for the remote NETBIOS system supports the Database Manager portion of OS/2 Extended Services by providing a user interface to identify the system in a list as having a NETBIOS-type connection.

Icon for a Database Manager Remote NETBIOS System

Disclosed is an icon design to represent the OS/2*
Database Manager Remote NETBIOS System. The icon is required for use
in the Presentation Manager*-based interface to the remote NETBIOS
system object.  Graphical interfaces rely  on direct manipulation
interface techniques. These techniques have become standard in the
industry and are based on the ability to represent objects in the
user interface.  These representations often take the form of icons.
An icon is a pictorial representation of an object.  The icon design
should invoke in the user an understanding of the purpose or use of
the object it represents.  An icon for the remote NETBIOS system
supports the Database Manager portion of OS/2 Extended Services by
providing a user interface to identify the system in a list as having
a NETBIOS-type connection.

Several symbols were evaluated, and it was determined that the
standard workstation icon with a solid screen was the best indication
of a NETBIOS-connected system. This icon, shown in the figure,
represents the NETBIOS-connected remote system object.
