Abstract

Disclosed is an icon design to represent the OS/2* Database Manager Workstation Directory. The icon is required for use in the Presentation Manager*-based interface to the workstation directory object. Graphical interfaces rely on direct manipulation interface techniques. These techniques have become standard in the industry and are based on the ability to represent objects in the user interface. These representations often take the form of icons. An icon is a pictorial representation of an object. The icon design should invoke in the user an understanding of the purpose or use of the object it represents.

Icon for a Database Manager Workstation Directory

Disclosed is an icon design to represent the OS/2*
Database Manager Workstation Directory. The icon is required for use
in the Presentation Manager*-based interface to the workstation
directory object.  Graphical interfaces rely  on direct manipulation
interface techniques. These techniques have become standard in the
industry and are based on the ability to represent objects in the
user interface.  These representations often take the form of icons.
An icon is a pictorial representation of an object.  The icon design
should invoke in the user an understanding of the purpose or use of
the object it represents.  An icon for the workstation directory
supports the Database Manager portion of OS/2 Extended Services by
providing a user interface for the following capabilities:
  * Catalog workstations for use as database servers for the current
workstation
  * Uncatalog workstations for use as database servers for the
current workstation

Several symbols were evaluated, and it was determined that the
standard workstation icon being shown with a directory tree symbol
was the best indication of a volume directory. This icon, shown in
the figure, represents the object where the workstation directory
tasks take place.
