Abstract

A mechanism was designed and implemented to access multiple part numbers of singulated TAB devices, excise and form a TAB device from a carrier using punch blades that deflect to remove the need for cutting clearance, present a formed TAB device for robot pickup and further processing in electric card assembly and remove the empty carriers from the punch and die mechanism.

Excise and Form Mechanism for a Singulated TAB Device

      A mechanism was designed and implemented to access multiple
part numbers of singulated TAB devices, excise and form a TAB device
from a carrier using punch blades that deflect to remove the need for
cutting clearance, present a formed TAB device for robot pickup and
further processing in electric card assembly and remove the empty
carriers from the punch and die mechanism.

      In the figure, the TAB carrier 1 is extracted from the magazine
2 and moved between the punch 3 and the die 4. The punch then moves
down, causing the heels on the punch blades 5 to enter the die and
deflect in, this action removes the need for a cutting clearance, the
TAB device 6 is then cut from the carrier and form against the die.
The die then transports the TAB device forward for robot pickup.  The
empty carrier 7 is removed from between the punch and die by indexing
another carrier forward.  The conveyor 8 removes the empty carrier
from the machine.
