Creation of Multiple Laser Classes via Optical Filtering

      Described here is a scheme which permits meeting domestic and
foreign laser regulations utilizing a single light source.

      To meet some foreign standards a laser device with a very low
output power level is required. In the domestic area laser scanners
with moderate power output for commercial applications and a scanner
with high output for industrial applications are needed.  While this
can be accomplished with several different models, utilizing
different light sources and duty cycles, the objective of the scheme
disclosed herein is to meet all the standards with a single scanner
containing the same electronics, light source, and duty cycles.

      The first application of the principal is the modification of
an OEM hand-held laser scanner designed to read barcode in an
industrial type environment.  This scanner has the moderate power
level required to read labels at some distance, such as would be
encountered in a warehouse or like environment.  This scanner would
become the basic unit.  However, as requirements vary, the scanner
would have to be furnished at a much reduced power level. To
accomplish this a neutral density filter with the required percentage
of transmission to reduce the power level to the class specifications
deemed necessary by the application will have to be placed.
