Apparatus and Algorithm for Collecting, Storing, and Recalling Printer Vital Product Data

A means is disclosed for collecting, storing, and recalling
device-specific data relating to a particular printer.

In a known printer, it is useful to collect, store, and recall
vital product data.  As defined here, vital product data includes
entering, storing, and communicating to the host the following
information:
      - Machine type and model
      - Plant of manufacture
      - Machine serial number
      - User-defined data.

This data may be entered by customers at the printer's operator
panel and is stored in non-volatile memory so that the data may be
retrieved for use by host software.

Included in the microcode of a known printer is the following
implementation for vital product data support:

Machine type, model, and plant of manufacture are constant for
a given printer and may be stored permanently in ROS.  Machine serial
number and user-defined data may change for each individual device.
The printer allows the customer to enter, via the printer operator
panel, the machine serial number and up to 16 bytes of alphanumeric
user-defined information (any data that the customer needs about the
printer; e.g., installed data, device characteristics, etc.).  This
data is then permanently stored in non-volatile storage of the
printer.  This data can be retrieved by the host by issuing the
proper commands,...
