Spherical Radius Tool

Disclosed is a method of producing a spherical radius on the
end of a prism or cylinder.

                            (Image Omitted)

The tool consists of a Backing Roll 1, Drive Roll 2, Take up
Roll 3, and Continuous Belt 4.  While the abrasive belt 4 is being
driven, the end face of the cylinder contacts the belt 4 that is
backed up by roll 1 that has the desired radius formed on its
surface.  The cylinder is rotating about its axis as it contacts the
surface of the belt and excess material is progressively removed.
Theoretically, the contact is line contact that sweeps across the end
of the cylinder in a cw or ccw direction.  An alternate eliminates
the continuous belt 4 and backing roll 1 can be constructed from an
abrasive material, such as alum oxide, silicon carbide or other,
depending on the cylinder material and the desired surface finish
required.
