Planar Adapter Connector for Cards with Edge Contacts

Disclosed is an adapter which allows for the connection
of two cards containing industry-standard gold contacts.  The
connector is configured so as to allow the resulting assembly to
contain the two cards in the same plane.

The adapter utilizes an industry-standard female knife
connector which typically mates with the gold contacts of one of the
cards to be connected.  Whereas the typical industry connector would
contain solderable pins on the opposite side of the connector, the
disclosed connector contains a mirror image of the first side's
female knife connections.  Thus, the connector is basically a
female/female interposer which allows for the connection of two cards
containing industry-standard gold contacts.  The figure graphically
depicts the disclosed connector.

The resultant two-card assembly utilizing the disclosed adapter
resides in the same plane.  This provides benefits where planar
connection is required as in the use of the "book" packages.
Additionally, assembly of the cards is simplified as soldering
operations to attach the connector to either of the cards is not
required.
