Abstract

Whether using the command line or the full screen interface for the LAN Server product, an administrator must select a single resource, then select the users and groups to establish authorities each has to the specified resource. This invention provides a method for an administrator to manage a collection of like resources as a single creating the entity and specifying the resources which belong to the entity. By specifying the name of the entity to the program, the administrator may: - create a new entity, - change the resources described by the entity, - change the access control for all objects in the entity, and - delete the entity. Local Area Network objects for LAN Server 1.2 may be described as user objects, applications, remote IPL images, aliases, etc.

Method to Manage Access Control of Multiple LAN Server 1.2 and 1.3 Resources with a Single OS/2 Command

Whether using the command line or the full screen
interface for the LAN Server product, an administrator must select a
single resource, then select the users and groups to establish
authorities each has to the specified resource. This invention
provides a method for an administrator to manage a collection of like
resources as a single creating the entity and specifying the
resources which belong to the entity.  By specifying the name of the
entity to the program, the administrator may:
      - create a new entity,
      - change the resources described by the entity,
      - change the access control for all objects in the entity, and
      - delete the entity.
Local Area Network objects for LAN Server 1.2 may be described as
user objects, applications, remote IPL images, aliases, etc., and as
long as each of the objects is a LAN Server primitive object, these
objects can be managed through this mechanism.

This article describes a new LAN object called an Access Set or
a resource group.  This object may be described much like a user
group.  That is, the resource group has a name and each name
represents a resource or group of resources on a domain.  However,
the items which belong to the resource group are not users but
resource objects.

The command line command for activating the function is LAN
followed by one or more parameters:
LAN  RGROUP - Lists the names of the Resource Groups in the
domain
LAN  RGROUP groupname - Lists the resources that are members of
the named group
LAN  RGROUP groupname  /ADD  ialias....  - Adds the groupname
and the aliases as members of the group.
LAN  RGROUP groupname  /DELETE - Deletes the groupname.
LAN  RGROUP groupname  /UPDATE ialias  -alias  - Adds or
deletes alias names to or from the group name.
