Font Selection Method

This article describes a font selection method used by
DisplayWrite* 4/2 (DW4/2) and DW4V2 to select fixed pitch and
proportional fonts on printers with removable font elements.

A method was required to select printer fonts in a consistent
and usable manner on IBM and OEM printers.

A method was also required to select printer fonts in a
consistent and usable manner on IBM and OEM printers with removable
font elements.

On DW3 and DW4 a method was implemented to select printer fonts
on printers such as the IBM 5201 Model 1 and 2.  However, this method
was not adequate for printers announced during the DW4/2 development
cycle, such as the IBM 5202 Quietwriter* III and the IBM 5204
Quickwriter* printers.  Specifically, the previous method often
caused these printers to select the wrong printer font and/or issue
extraneous prompts for the user to install (or default) fonts on the
printer.  These prompts were confusing to the user, since in many
cases the user had the correct font element on the printer.
Furthermore, each prompt stopped the printer, forcing the user to
respond to the prompt to resume the printing of a document.
Additional investigation revealed that the method had to be improved
to select fonts in an optimum manner on OEM printers as well as IBM
printers.

A new method was defined to select printer fonts for
fixed-pitch type styles (type styles 1-153, 211-279) and proportional
type styles (154-200) on printers with removable font elements.
Printer fonts are organized into a list (henceforth called the font
list) that associates a typestyle number and character set specified
in a document with a font on the printer.  In DW/PC, the characters
and symbols comprising a printer font are defined in terms of an
ASCII Character character set, an ASCII Symbols character set, or an
ASCII PC character set.  A font may be defined with any combination
of the three character sets.  The ASCII Characters character set can
print all document characters in the EBC...
